Woman hospitalized after being shot in chest in Detroit neighborhood

Woman's 5-month-old baby in backseat was not injured

DETROIT – A woman was rushed to a hospital after being shot in the chest in a Detroit neighborhood Saturday.

The woman, Dazhane King, was shot on Frontenac Avenue near Harper Avenue.

One person was later taken into custody on the city's west side after leading police on a chase.

The woman was in a white Chevrolet Impala when the shots were fired. It's unclear if she was inside the car or just near it, but the woman's 5-month-old baby in the backseat was unharmed.

After being shot, the woman ran away from the car before collapsing in a neighbor's backyard.

A neighbor stumbled upon the victim in his backyard.

"She was laying there, raising her hand up," the neighbor said.

The investigation revealed that King escaped the gunman, abandoning her vehicle with her 5-month-old girl inside.

The neighbor called 911 and tried to render aid.

"I couldn't do nothing for her but to get the ambulance," the neighbor said. "The 911 operator, she told me to grab a clean towel and make her press on the wound."

But the neighbor said there was so much blood he couldn't tell where the wound was.

By the time police arrived, the woman was able muster enough strength to tell them who shot her.

"Her baby's father," a family member said.

The child's father left the scene and jumped into another car. Police caught up with him and the vehicle on the Davison Freeway.

"If they were chasing him, he had to be in a different car, because they chased him," the family member said.

The chase ended on Detroit's west side off McNichols Road and Inverness Street, and when police pulled the car over, they found the man and two young children inside. They were not hurt, but it's believed they witnessed the shooting.
