Woman leads Shelby Twp. police on 100 mph chase after dropping off son near school

Woman has warrant for arrest from 2004

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A woman led police officers on a chase Wednesday after dropping off her son near a Shelby Township school.

Police officers were all around Eisenhower High School for safe-driving patrols when a white Chrysler 300 sped past an officer on a nearby residential street.

The officer pulled the woman over and she quickly asked if her son could get out and walk to school so he wouldn't be late.

The officer said the boy could get out, and two minutes later, the woman sped away.

Police said Stacey Nixon, 41, turned east onto 25 Mile Road right where Shelby Township police officers were.

"So it was just by chance we were all right there," Shelby Township police Lt. Jeff Daniel said. "No way we were going to continue this chase any further than we had to."

Dash-cam video shows the car blowing through the intersection of 25 Mile and Van Dyke. Nixon allegedly drove more than 100 mph.

Knowing somebody could get hurt, Shelby Township officers ended the pursuit, but not the chase. Over the course of the next four hours, they checked back into the school and figured out who the woman was.

"After talking to the family, they had concerns for her safety," Daniel said.

The pinged her cellphone, which brought them to a Walmart on 23 Mile Road, where they found the Chrysler 300. Nixon was loading or unloading something in the trunk.

Nixon was arrested right next to her car at the Walmart.

Police said Nixon had a felony warrant for her arrest from 2004.

"She knew, which is probably why she wanted to get her son out of the vehicle and go on her merry way," Daniel said.

Nixon was charged Thursday with fleeing police, operating without insurance and registration and driving on a suspended license. The license plate on the Chrysler 300 also didn't match the car.
