Woman Pleads Guilty In Fake Pregnancy Case

Search Had Been Under Way For Infant In Telegraph, West Chicago Area

REDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. - A 26-year-old woman has pleaded guilty to filing a false police report saying she had given birth and put the infant in a Dumpster.

Redford Township police had initiated a search on June 17 after the report came in that Ashley Butler had given birth in the early-morning hours and disposed of the infant behind a strip mall in the Telegraph Road and West Chicago Street area.

Police said they eventually found Butler and she was taken to a hospital to be examined, where it was determined she had never been pregnant.

Neighbors Local 4 spoke with said they were outraged because they had just thrown the woman a baby shower.

"I really thought she was pregnant. I just saw her a couple of days ago and her stomach was big, like she was pregnant," said friend Chineta Finch. "I think it's crazy. I don't know what to think of it."

Butler is scheduled to be sentenced on July 22.
