Woman pretends to be substitute at Waterford Township school

Police say woman pretended to be mother at Riverside Elementary

WATERFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Megan Przybylowicz had a new substitute teacher on Monday, but right away something didn't seem right.

"She didn't look like she was a sub. She was just sitting there not even doing anything," said Megan, a 5th-grader at Riverside Elementary in Waterford.

The principal took a closer look at the woman's identification. When the woman became upset, police were called and she was arrested for impersonating her mother.

"She was in handcuffs. They took her to the back of the car and just drove off," said Megan.

The school emailed parents to tell them exactly what happened. As they arrived to pick up their kids, some were reading the email for the first time.

"They make us parents work so hard to come in. I need permission just to go to my child's classroom, so it doesn't make any sense that a stranger who comes in as a teacher can come right in and they wouldn't have caught that sooner," said Natasha Gray, a parent at the school.

The school is not commenting on what, if any, changes will be made to its guest teacher policy.

As for Megan, the whole thing left her a little bit scared.

"You don't know if she could be something else, like, with bad things, like with a gun or something," she said.

The school learned after the fact the 24-year-old woman, of the Flint area, did not have any kind of criminal record. Her mother showed up at the police station as her daughter was being questioned. The mother was arrested after, investigators say, she admitted they were both in on the fraud and the only motive was to make money.

Both are being held at a jail pending charges.
