Woman questions why it took DPD hours to respond to crash into home

Damage is so severe, woman says she can't walk out front door

DETROIT – A woman who called police after a driver slammed into her home was left to deal with the situation alone for about four hours until officers arrived, she said Sunday.

“It’s messed up,” Knequay Hunter said.

The wreck took place about 1 a.m., when two men in a silver Ford Focus with Oklahoma plates crashed into her porch.

"I was just like, ‘What the heck is going on?’ I called the police,” Hunter said. “It took like, five hours (for them) to get here."

Hunter called 911, she said, and kept placing calls for several hours. Still, she told Local 4, police didn’t show up until 5 a.m.

The two men in the crashed car, neighbors said, had plenty of time. They tried to take the plates off the vehicle and then stumbled away from the wreckage, neighbors added.

"Oh, they was -- something was wrong with them,” Hunter said. “(They were) drugged out out or something. (I) don't know what it was.”

They left an empty baggie and one of the occupant’s glasses on the lawn.

Before police arrived, others came to the house and claimed to be the vehicle’s owner -- and then tried to remove the car, along with other possible evidence.

"That's why I was getting freaked out,” Hunter said. “Like, what are you doing here? Then some other people came, and then other people came. Luckily, I have a side door. Otherwise, we'd be trapped in here. My whole porch is knocked off."

The damage is so severe that Hunter can’t walk out her front door.

Police said they had 28 calls for service in Hunter's area at the time of her emergency, and eight of those were for life-threatening situations.
