Detroit police are searching for a man who abducted a woman at gunpoint and raped her in a field before letting her go.
It happened near a 24-hour Rite Aid at Fenkell Road and Grand River Avenue on the city's west side.
Police sources said the 37-year-old woman was walking toward the Rite Aid around 3 a.m. to make some purchases. A man in a newer model white Ford Expedition somehow coaxed the woman to come over to his vehicle and that's when he pulled out a gun and forced her into the vehicle.
At gunpoint, the man drove her to a nearby field behind the vacant Healy International School where the woman said the man raped her. He also stole her cellphone and money.
Other women who work in the area, such as MarKisha Horton, said they will now take extra precautions on the way to and from work.
"I walk home almost everyday and now I'll just make sure that I always look back, that I'm not on my phone, and that I don't have my iPod in my ear. I'm just making sure that my surroundings are clear," said Horton.
Horton is still in shock that this happened so close to her work.
"It's just scary cause knowing this, now I have to watch my back," she said. "We are living in a world where people just don't care anymore. They are just going to do what they're going to do regardless."
Police are reviewing surveillance video taken from the area. They are also looking closer into the woman's story.
