Woman who flipped off judge back in court

Penelope Soto arrested for drug possession

MIAMI – A woman who flipped off a Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge returned to court on Wednesday.

Penelope Soto, 18, had a more subdued and respectful attitude in court than she had during a court appearance on Monday.

Earlier this week, Soto was arrested for illegal possession of Xanax.

When Soto faced Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Jorge Rodriguez-Chomat on Monday morning, she got in even more trouble.

After dismissing her, Rodriguez-Chomat called Soto back to tell her he was issuing her a $10,000 bond. She walked away, muttered "F*** you," and flipped him off, video showed.

Rodriguez-Chomat responded by holding her in contempt of court and sentenced her to 30 days in jail.

In drug court on Wednesday, a judge lowered her bond to $5,000 and sentenced her to serve in a drug program. If she completes it, her charges may be dropped.

Although Soto's bond was lowered, the 30-day contempt of court sentence still stands. That's something that only the original judge can dismiss.

Meanwhile, Soto remains the talk of the town in the Miami-Dade County courthouse, a place where murder, rape and other suspects come through every day, reported Local 10's Glenna Milberg.

Soto is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center (TGK).
