Brees And Saints Get Untracked To Pick Up First Win Of Season

POSTED: Monday, October 15, 2007

(Sports Network) - Drew Brees and the Saints offense awoke from their season-long slumber, as Brees completed 25-of-36 passes for 246 yards and two scores, and New Orleans earned it's first win, 28-17, over the Seattle Seahawks.

David Patten gained 113 yards on eight catches, and Reggie Bush rushed for 97 yards on 19 carries and added 44 yards on six catches for the Saints (1-4). Josh Bullocks blocked a field goal and picked off a Matt Hasselbeck pass for New Orleans, which also scored on a fumbled punt snap by Seattle that Pierre Thomas recovered and ran into the end zone.

Hasselbeck completed 26-of-43 passes for 362 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception for Seattle (3-3), which has dropped two in a row. Shaun Alexander gained only 35 yards on 14 carries for the Seahawks, who got 120 yards receiving on nine grabs by Bobby Engram.

A special teams miscue led to the first Saints score. Boone Stutz was signed last week to replace long-snapper Derek Rackley, who lost the job due to his poor performances early this season. Stutz made an inauspicious debut, however, bouncing the snap on Seattle's first punt. Punter Ryan Plackemeier couldn't handle the grounder, and Thomas ended up with the ball, running it into the end zone from five yards out for a Saints score with 12:38 left in the quarter.

"You can't start the game like we did and expect to have results. Our special teams have not been good and we have been struggling," said Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren.

The game took a strange turn a little more than a minute later, when an overhead NBC camera, suspended above the field by cables, fell to the turf, causing a 10-minute delay until the camera was cleared.

The break did nothing to improve Seattle's play, though, as the Saints were the benefit of a bit of luck later in the quarter. On a 3rd-and-11 from their own 24, Brees completed a pass over the middle to Patten for a 16-yard gain, but the Saints receiver fumbled the ball forward. Three Seahawks defenders somehow failed to fall on the ball, though, and Ernie Johnson corralled it at the Seattle 45 for a 31-yard gain on the play.

The Saints kept moving from there, and Brees found Johnson for a three-yard scoring pass to cap the 13-play, 86-yard drive, and New Orleans took a 14-0 lead with 14:28 left in the first half.

The Seahawks drove to the Saints 26 on the next drive, but stalled there, and Josh Brown's 44-yard field goal try was blocked by Bullocks. New Orleans kept the pressure on, and a seven-yard scoring run by Lance Moore off an end- around, set up by 22-yard scamper by Bush, put the Saints up 21-0 with 5:18 left in the half.

The Seattle offense finally came to life, marching 63 yards on seven plays, capped by a 17-yard TD toss from Hasselbeck to Ben Obomanu made it a 21-7 game with 2:16 left.

Brees led an efficient two-minute drill, though, hitting Patten for a 36-yard gain early in the next drive, and following that up with passes of 18 and seven yards to Patten to move deep into Seattle territory, before hitting Marques Colston for a two-yard scoring pass. Seattle found itself in a 28-7 hole with only 30 seconds left in the half.

"They played more single safety than we expected, when teams play single safety it gives your receivers more chances to excel," said Patten.

Hasselbeck made two quick completions, though, to move to the New Orleans 34, and Brown drilled a 52-yard field goal with two seconds left in the half to make it a 28-10 game at the intermission.

The Seahawks came out flat in the second half, though, only mounting a charge in the fourth quarter, when Nate Burleson broke through for a 22-yard catch- and-run score with 6:39 left to pull within 28-17.

The Seahawks went for the onsides kick and did not recover, but still had a chance to make a game of it when they drove into New Orleans territory on the ensuing possession. Hasselbeck threw up an awful pass, however, and was easily picked off by Bullocks, who fielded the ball at the six-yard line as if returning a punt.

Seattle had yet another chance to climb back into the game, driving deep into Seattle territory still only trailing by 11, but, on a 4th-and-9 from the 14, the Seahawks opted to go for the touchdown instead of kicking the field goal, and an incomplete pass into the end zone ended any hopes for a Seattle comeback.

Game Notes

Opponents scored 42 straight points on the Seahawks, going back to the 21-0 loss to Pittsburgh the week prior, the first time that had ever happened to a Holmgren-coached club...Seahawks defensive tackle Chuck Darby left in the fourth quarter with a knee injury and did not return...Before the game the Seahawks honored longtime fullback Mack Strong. Strong retired last week after leaving last Sunday's loss to Pittsburgh with a herniated disc in his neck that is pinching his spinal cord.
