St. Louis Blues (15-14-5) At Edmonton Oilers (15-16-4), 9 P.M.
(Sports Network) - The last few seasons haven't gone well for the Edmonton Oilers, but the team has had plenty of satisfying moments when facing the St. Louis Blues in recent years. Edmonton shoots for a ninth consecutive win in this series when the Blues continue their Western Canadian tour with a stop at Rexall Place this evening. The Oilers took all four matchups between these teams last season and continued their mastery over the Blues with a 5-3 triumph in St. Louis earlier this month. Edmonton hasn't lost to the Blues since a 4-3 setback at Rexall Place on December 7, 2007. The club has yet to win on its current homestand, however. The Oilers have dropped the first three tests of this four-game residency after blowing a two- goal lead in Saturday's 4-2 defeat to Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals. Washington scored all four of its goals in the final session, with Ovechkin netting two of those tallies, to hand Edmonton its fifth straight overall loss at home. The Oilers had generated a season-best five wins in a row -- all on the road -- prior to this homestand. "He's the best player in the league and you have to take away his time and space," said Edmonton defenseman Steve Staios of Ovechkin. "We did a good job for 40 minutes, but we just sort of let off the gas and he started to take over." Oilers goaltender Jeff Deslauriers stopped 38 shots in a losing cause, with Shawn Horcoff and Andrew Cogliano recording the team's goals on the evening. While Edmonton has struggled at home, the Blues have performed quite well in enemy venues over the course of this season. Yesterday's 3-1 triumph over Vancouver improved St. Louis to 9-3-3 on the road in 2009-10, and the Blues have won four of their five away games thus far in December. David Backes led the way in Sunday's win with a pair of goals, while Keith Tkachuk scored once and Ty Conklin turned aside 29-of-30 shots to help the Blues exact revenge for last season's playoff loss to the Canucks. Vancouver swept St. Louis in four games in the Western Conference Quarterfinals back in April. "It was obviously a little vendetta," admitted Backes. "They ended our season last year in four straight in the fashion of sweeping us and rubbing it in our faces." The Blues, who stopped a two-game losing streak with the victory, will also visit Calgary and Minnesota on this trek before opening a four-game homestand Sunday against Buffalo.
