9-year-old gives away birthday gifts to go help animals

Madyson Olsen wanted her birthday gifts to help out Detroit Dog Rescue

DETROIT – Madyson Olsen's ninth birthday brought in some great presents, and all of them are going to the dogs.

When her birthday invitations were sent out the St. Clair Shores girl asked her friends to help out man's best friend instead of her.

The gifts are all going to Detroit Dog Rescue (DDR).

"Yeah but I thought it would be better for dogs," said Olsen when asked if she wanted any gifts for herself "Cuz I have a bunch of stuff in my room," she said.

Madyson 's mom is not surprised her daughter is so generous, but she is surprised it's towards dogs.

The newly 9-year-old had some bad luck with a Labrador Retriever.

"I was feeding my dog a carrot for some reason and then she accidently bit my thumb, said Olsen. Since then Madyson has grown very fond of dogs, at least the small ones.

Detroit Dog Rescue cares for 42 dogs that were voluntarily turned in by their owners.

"I can't stress how much our foster base means to us because they really give the animals a chance to get acclimated with their environments," said Kristina Rinaldi from DDR.

All of the 42 dogs will be helped by the selflessness of one girl.

"Not many 9-year-olds would give up birthday gifts for something, for animals," said Madyson's mom Becky Olson.

To thank her for her generosity Rinaldi presented Olsen with her own DDR swag, "so you are now a DDR crew member," she told Olsen .
