In all 12 dogs --filthy and covered in mats and feces -- were discovered by workers at Pet Smart. The rescue organization thinks a local breeder is responsible for discarding the dogs.

The dogs were professionally groomed and checked by a veterinarian. It will still be several weeks before the dogs are available for adoption.

To help raise funds the Animal Welfare Society of Southeastern Michigan will host a Howl-O-Ween pet party Saturday from 3 until 5 p.m.

The event will be held at 27796 John R Road in Madison Heights.

A prize basket will go to the pet with the best costume and the event will feature fun pet inspired games like, bobbing for tennis balls, musical sit and snoopy says.

There will also be a best trick and best owner/pet look-a-like contests.

The cost is only $5 per dog. Halloween Photos are $5. There will also be a bake sale and pizza.

If you can't make it to the party donations can be mailed to:
