According to the list based on 2012 registration statistics, German Shepherds ranked as the most popular pooch with Detroiters.

Rounding out the second and third spots were Rottweilers and Labrador Retrievers.

The large breeds took the three top spots over Yorkshire Terriers, who ranked fourth on the list in Detroit.

Nationally the Labrador Retriever held the top spot for two years in a row, followed by German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers.

Compared to last year's ranking, the bulky Bulldog muscled its way into the title of fifth most popular dog in the U.S, edging out the Yorkshire Terrier.

The Golden Retriever also overtook the Beagle for third place, and Rottweilers advanced one spot on the national list.
