Ajua was born at the Detroit Zoo’s Great Apes of Harambee on September 4, 2008, to mother, Akati, and father, Imara.
Jua means "sun" in Swahili, so the zoo staff planned a sun-themed celebration.
Environmental enrichment includes the introduction of novel and sometimes unpredictable elements such as objects, sounds, scents or other stimuli that give the animals the opportunity to express choice and control in their environments.
Environmental enrichment is provided daily at the Detroit Zoo to enhance all animal habitats.
