Tips for caring for pets after severe weather

After severe weather or a disaster, a pet’s behavior could change, they may be confused or they might encounter more hazards.

For the first few days after an emergency, the Department of Homeland Security suggests leashing your pet when they go outside and keeping close contact with them.

Flooding might bring out snakes and other dangerous animals. Also, power lines could be down in the area, so it is important to watch pets.

Scents familiar to your pet may be altered by severe weather. This can cause the animal to be confused and become lost.

As a result of an emergency, a pet might be aggressive or defensive. The Department of Homeland Security advises closely monitoring them, and keeping them leashed in a fenced yard and providing water and shelter when they are outside.

If a pet is having persistent behavioral issues or showing signs of health problems, take him or her to a veterinarian.
