It's no secret that Michigan drivers are buried under some of the highest auto insurance rates in the country.

New research from InsuranceQuotes.com crunched some numbers to find the best and worst deals, based on the type of vehicle you might buy.

For the purposes of this study, InsuranceQuotes.com divided the annual cost to insure each vehicle by its manufacturer's suggested retail price to determine which cars are relative bargains to insure and which are more expensive.

Considering both the cost of the vehicle and the cost of insurance is a key to making sure any vehicle is affordable for you budget. This research found the Ford Explorer is the best deal in car insurance based on this formula.

According to these numbers, sport utility vehicles and trucks account for eight of the top nine insurance values. At the other end of the spectrum, the Ford Focus is being called the worst deal.

The larger vehicles are found to be less likely to be damaged in an accident, do a better job of protecting the people in the car, and tend to be driven by more responsible drivers. Sedans tend to be more expensive to insure because of high theft rates, they can suffer more damage, and they are driven by riskier driver, such as young, single men.
