Vegas Q&A: Staying Fit In Vegas

Question: We're heading to Vegas for a week and I'm hoping to find a way to stave off the extra pounds I'm going to pack on at the buffets. Any suggestions for keeping active?

Answer: My theory with Vegas has always been: To heck with the diet, I'm on vacation. But then again, I'm always looking for an excuse.

If you have stronger willpower than I, there are lots of ways to keep yourself active.

Walking is the No. 1 calorie burner in Vegas. Bypass the moving sidewalks and the monorails and you'll be surprised how much of a sweat you can work up just by walking from one hotel to the next. If you're feeling really crazed with endorphins, you could start at Mandalay Bay on the south end of the Strip and head up to the Stratosphere at the north end and back again -- that's an eight-mile round trip.

Most hotels also have some form of health club, from simple treadmills and weight machines to elaborate high-tech gyms. Policies vary at each hotel in terms of how much, if anything, they charge, so be sure to check ahead of time if this is important to you.

Finally, you could take advantage of any number of recreational activities that Las Vegas has to offer. From golf to tennis to horseback riding or even bowling, there are tons of ways to keep yourself on the go.
