Booty, Jarrett Lead USC In Rose Bowl Romp

POSTED: 9:24 pm EST January 1, 2007

(Sports Network) - John David Booty threw for 391 yards and four touchdowns while Dwayne Jarrett hauled in 11 passes for 205 yards with two scores as No. 8 Southern California dominated the second half en route to a 32-18 beating of third-ranked Michigan in the 93rd Rose Bowl.

Booty finished 27-of-45 passing without an interception and Steve Smith had seven catches for 108 yards and a touchdown for the Trojans (11-2), who have won an incredible 56 of their last 60 games overall.

"It was a great performance today," Jarrett said. "I just try to go out and play hard. The first half we were a little conservative but in the second half, we just let loose and let it all out."

USC, which played in its record 31st Rose Bowl, snapped a two-game losing streak in Pasadena, with the most recent defeat coming at the hands of arch- rival UCLA last December 2.

Chad Henne completed 26 of his 41 passes for 309 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for the Wolverines (11-2), who were coming off a 42-39 loss to top-ranked Ohio State -- their only setback of the regular season.

"It's a great disappointment," Michigan coach Lloyd Carr said. "We give USC all the credit. They did a great job defensively."

Steve Breaston ended with seven catches for 115 yards and a score and Adrian Arrington also caught a touchdown for Michigan, which was playing in its third BCS Bowl in the past four seasons and making an appearance for the fourth time overall.

The Wolverines' lone BCS Bowl win came in the 2000 Orange Bowl when they edged Alabama in overtime, 35-34.

With the game tied 3-3 at halftime, USC came out in the third quarter and capitalized on a Wolverines' turnover, starting a 29-point second half to put Michigan away.

Faced with a 2nd-and-9 from their own 46, Henne tossed a short pass that was intercepted by Lawrence Jackson and gave the Trojans the ball at Michigan's 38. On the third play of the drive, Booty connected with Jarrett for 25 yards and a 1st-and-goal before finding Chris McFoy in the back of the end zone for a two-yard touchdown pass with 8:43 left.

After a three-and-out by the Wolverines, USC gained possession at its own 30 and orchestrated a quick five-play, 70-yard set that culminated with Booty's 22-yard TD throw to Jarrett. Mario Danelo's extra point attempt failed and kept it a 13-point affair.

Moments later, Henne turned the ball over again -- this time on a fumble while being sacked -- with Jackson coming up with it at the Michigan 32. 11 plays and 23 yards later, Danelo capped the drive with a 26-yard field goal to increase the Trojans' cushion to 19-3.

The Wolverines, however, moved 80 yards over nine plays and cut their deficit to eight early in the fourth when Henne hooked up with Arrington in the middle of the end zone for an 11-yard TD. Mike Hart then took the handoff from Henne and punched it in up the gut for the two-point conversion.

USC came right back and answered Michigan's score to go up 25-11 with 11:18 to play. On 3rd-and-10 from his own 38, Booty dropped back in the pocket and went deep to Jarrett, who hauled in the pass, shook a defender and scampered 62 yards down the left sideline for the touchdown. For a second time, the extra point was unsuccessful.

Booty's fourth TD pass of the game, this one from seven yards out to Smith, finished up an 85-yard scoring march with just under seven minutes remaining. Booty was stellar during the possession, completing passes of 26, 29 and 23 yards to Smith, Jarrett and Fred Davis, respectively.

With 1:09 left in the contest, Breaston's 41-yard TD reception capped a six- play, 70-yard series by the Wolverines to account for the final points.

Danelo's 26-yard field goal capped a 10-play, 49-yard march to put USC on top, 3-0, with 4:02 remaining in the first quarter. Booty led the drive by completing 4-of-6 passes for 43 yards, including an 18-yard strike to Jarrett on 3rd-and-12.

Michigan tied the contest on its ensuing possession when Garrett Rivas split the uprights on a 43-yarder at 13:35 in the second frame. The 13-play, 54-yard marathon lasted 5:27 and was highlighted by Mario Manningham's 17-yard reception for a first down at the Trojans' 26.

Game Notes

Arrington finished with four receptions for 34 yards...Hart ended with 47 yards rushing on 17 carries...Davis had three catches for 39 yards...Tyler Ecker caught six passes for 78 yards for Michigan...The Trojans improved to 6-4 against the Wolverines. Previously, the two schools met in the 2004 Rose Bowl with USC posting a 28-14 victory en route to the national championship.
