National League Game Capsules

POSTED: Saturday, July 5, 2008

(Sports Network) - Bronson Arroyo earned his second consecutive win as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Washington Nationals 3-0 in the second game of a four-game series at Great American Ball Park. Arroyo (6-7) pitched six shutout innings, scattering five hits and three walks while striking out three. Francisco Cordero pitched a scoreless ninth, scattering two hits, to earn his 17th save of the year and to help Cincinnati to its fifth win in seven games. Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 11th home run of the year while Adam Dunn was the only Reds player to record multiple hits, finishing the day 2-for-4. Jason Bergmann (1-6) got the loss despite a quality start, throwing six innings and allowing three runs - two earned - on six hits while striking out five and walking three. Bergmann has not recorded a win since May 15 despite giving up only six runs in his last four starts. Dmitri Young reached base in all four of his plate appearances, batting 2-for-2 with two walks for the Nationals, who have lost four of five.

Final Score: Milwaukee 9, Pittsburgh 1

Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - J.J. Hardy hit a two-run homer as part of a five-run outburst in the fifth inning en route to a 9-1 Brewers victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the opener of a three-game set. Hardy finished the game batting 4-for-5 while Bill Hall contributed three hits and three RBIs, including his 11th home run of the year. Ben Sheets (10-2) threw 120 pitches, which kept his outing relatively short, but in his 5 2/3 innings he only allowed a run on eight hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Tom Gorzelanny (6-7), on the other hand, was shelled in 4 2/3 innings, giving up eight runs -- seven earned -- on 11 hits while striking out four and walking four. Jason Bay, Xavier Nady and Jack Wilson each contributed two hits for the Pirates, losers of three of their last five.

Final Score: Los Angeles 10, San Francisco 7

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Andre Ethier went 3-for-6 with a homer and three runs batted in, and the Los Angeles Dodgers outslugged the San Francisco Giants, 10-7, in an Independence Day matchup between the NL West rivals. Nomar Garciaparra returned from the disabled list and went 2-for-4, drove in two and scored for the Dodgers, who have won four straight. Andruw Jones also returned from the DL for LA but wasn't as successful, striking out four times in an 0-for-5 day. Derek Lowe (6-8) won despite allowing five runs -- four earned -- on eight hits in five innings. Aaron Rowand went 3- for-4 and drove in two for the Giants, who have split their last six games. Osiris Matos (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs and four hits in only two-thirds of an inning. Starter Jonathan Sanchez gave up five hits and three runs in five frames, with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Final Score: Philadelphia 3, New York 2

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Shane Victorino's two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-2 win over the New York Mets in the opener of a four-game series at Citizens Bank Park. Duaner Sanchez started the ninth for the Mets and struck out the first two batters he faced. Pedro Feliz then hooked a double into the left-field corner before Victorino smacked the game-winning single to right. J.A. Happ made his second major league start for Philadelphia in place of struggling hurler Brett Myers, who was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday. The 25-year-old Happ did not factor into the decision, giving up two runs on three hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. Brad Lidge (2-0) set down the Mets in order in the ninth to earn the win. Ryan Howard went 2-for-4 and drove in his 73rd run of the season for the Phillies, who have won four in a row. New York starter Johan Santana gave up two runs on six hits over eight solid innings in a no-decision. Santana is winless in his last six starts. Sanchez (3-1) was saddled with the loss. Ramon Castro finished 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Mets, who have dropped two of their last three. Jose Reyes and David Wright each drove in a run for New York.

Final Score: Atlanta 6, Houston 2

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Kelly Johnson hit a two-run homer to lead Atlanta past Houston, 6-2, in the opener of a three-game weekend set from Turner Field. Chipper Jones and Brian McCann each had a pair of hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Braves, who snapped a five-game losing streak. Tim Hudson (9-6) allowed just four hits and one run over seven innings, fanning six and walking three to record his second win in three starts. Lance Berkman knocked in a run for the Astros, who lost for the fourth straight time. Starter Brian Moehler (4-4) took the loss for Houston, charged with six hits and five runs with one strikeout and three walks in six innings.

Final Score: Colorado 18, Florida 17

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Chris Iannetta drove in four runs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth, as the Colorado Rockies trailed by as many as nine runs but rallied for a wild, improbable 18-17 win over the Florida Marlins in the second of a four-game set at Coors Field. With Kevin Gregg on to close with a 17-16 lead, Clint Barmes and Matt Holliday started the ninth with back-to-back singles. Garrett Atkins then ripped a liner to left for a single, and Barmes sprinted home with the tying run. Jeff Baker hit a grounder to second that looked to be a surefire double play, but Hanley Ramirez dropped the flip to second and the bases were loaded. Iannetta then slapped a grounder through the drawn-in infield to give the Rockies one of the most unlikely victories in franchise history. The teams combined for 43 hits and eight home runs -- six from the Rockies -- in the slugfest. The nine-run deficit is the largest the Rockies have ever overcome and the largest lead the Marlins have ever lost. Atkins finished 5-for-6 with three runs batted in and three runs scored for the Rockies, who picked up their second straight win in their final at-bat and fourth in a row overall. Holliday homered twice -- including a grand slam -- and drove in five runs, while Spilborghs was 4-for-5 with a pair of long balls, three RBI and four runs scored. Barmes also had four hits and scored three times. The rally made an unlikely winner out of Taylor Buchholz (3-2) who worked a scoreless ninth. Starter Greg Reynolds lasted just 1 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits, while Cedrick Bowers was rocked for five runs in two frames and Jason Grilli was touched for four runs in an inning-plus. Cody Ross had five RBI for the Marlins, who have lost three of their last four. Hanley Ramirez homered, knocked in two and scored three runs, while Jorge Cantu and Mike Jacobs had four hits apiece. Gregg (6-4) blew his sixth save while taking the loss in relief of Scott Olsen, who lasted five innings despite being hammered for nine runs -- eight earned -- on 11 hits.

Final Score: Chicago 2, St. Louis 1

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Carlos Zambrano was impressive in his first game back from the disabled list, and he shut down St. Louis as the Cubs beat the Cardinals, 2-1, in the opener of a three-game set. Zambrano (9-3) pitched for the first time since losing to the Tampa Bay Rays on June 18. The big right-hander left that start with shoulder discomfort and was placed on the DL four days later. He gave up just four hits in six shutout frames. Kerry Wood earned his 22nd save of the year with a scoreless ninth. Kosuke Fukudome and Geovany Soto both hit solo home runs for the Cubs, who have won three of their last five games overall. Albert Pujols became the fifth fastest player in major league history to hit 300 home runs with a solo shot in the eighth inning for the Cardinals, who have lost two in a row and three of four. Yadier Molina extended his hit streak to 11 games with a single in the second inning. Braden Looper (9-6) took the loss as he was touched for two runs on six hits in seven innings.

Final Score: San Diego 5, Arizona 1

Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Cha Seung Baek allowed just two hits over six shutout innings, as the San Diego Padres dispatched the Arizona Diamondbacks, 5-1, in the opener of a three-game set. Baek (2-3) carried a no-hitter into the sixth while striking out seven and walking one for the Padres, who won for just the second time in their last 12 games. Kevin Kouzmanoff went 2- for-5 with a run batted in, while Adrian Gonzalez picked up his 69th RBI of the season. Chad Tracy drove in the only run for the Diamondbacks, who have lost three of their last four. Dan Haren (8-5) held the Padres to two runs on seven hits in seven innings -- fanning seven while walking just one -- but took the loss.
