Red Wings Honored At White House

POSTED: Friday, October 10, 2008
UPDATED: 11:11 am EDT October 15, 2008

The Detroit Red Wings went to the White House Tuesday to celebrate last season's Stanley Cup championship.

The Red Wings met with President George W. Bush and Captain Nicklas Lidstrom presented him with two red herseys-- No. 43 for him and No. 41 for his father, President George Bush.

Bush paid tribute to popular players like forward Darren McCarty, Chris Chelios and Kris Draper.

The president joked that Draper even scored a goal with his teeth.

Detroit won its 11th Cup last June, defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins in six games.

”There is a sign over the door of the Red Wings locker at Joe Louis Arena that reads this: 'To who much is given, much is expected,' and the Red Wings live up to those words on the ice and off the ice,'" said Bush.

The Red Wings are hoping to become the NHL's first team to repeat since they did it in 1998.

Lidstrom joked with Bush when he said, "even though you won't be here, we are hoping to come back next year."

The Red Wings beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-1 on Monday night, giving Detroit its second road win in two tries this season.
