American League Game Summary - Kansas City At Detroit

POSTED: Tuesday, July 7, 2009

(Sports Network) - Mike Jacobs' solo home run off Detroit reliever Fernando Rodney in the ninth inning was the difference, as Kansas City edged the Tigers, 4-3, in the opener of a three-game series at Comerica Park.

The versatile Willie Bloomquist finished 3-for-4 with a homer and a two-run triple for the Royals, who have strung together three consecutive wins. Jose Guillen and Miguel Olivo both collected two hits in the victory.

Ryan Raburn homered to go along with an RBI double for Detroit, which had won eight games in a row at home. Marcus Thames also went deep.

Detroit relinquished a 2-1 lead in the eighth. Joel Zumaya started the inning for the Tigers and gave up a leadoff single to Olivo. Following a one-out walk to David DeJesus, Bloomquist tripled to the gap in right-center to put Kansas City on top.

The Tigers quickly tied the score in the home half against Roman Colon (1-0), who issued a one-out walk to Thames. Raburn then stroked a double to center to plate pinch-runner Josh Anderson. Raburn was thrown out at third on the play.

Rodney (0-2) fanned Guillen to begin the ninth, then served up the go-ahead home run to Jacobs, a towering drive to right field.

"I was able to get a pitch to handle and put a good swing on it," Jacobs said.

Joakim Soria worked around a one-out single in the bottom of the frame to notch his 13th save of the season.

Detroit starter Armando Galarraga pitched well enough to get a win, allowing one run on five hits with seven strikeouts over seven solid innings. Gil Meche got the start for the Royals, yielding two runs on five hits with five walks and as many strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.

"Once again, our offense was (inconsistent)," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland. "Our setup guy and closer gave up a run. That happens. I have no issues with that. Our offense has not gotten going for whatever reason."

Detroit drew first blood as Thames led off the second with a blast to left field, and the Tigers loaded the bases later in the frame. Meche, though, induced an inning-ending, double-play grounder from Adam Everett to escape further trouble.

Bloomquist's two-out shot tied the game in the sixth, but Detroit re-assumed the lead in the bottom half when Raburn launched a pitch to the left-field seats with two gone.

Game Notes:

Juan Cruz tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for KC...Detroit has recorded at least one extra-base hit in each of the club's last 32 games...The Royals acquired infielder/outfielder Ryan Freel from the Chicago Cubs for a player to be named and cash considerations on Monday.
