AMERICANS KNOW THEIR FAVORITE OLYMPIANS.
Michael Phelps.
Missy Franklin.
Lebron James.
Michael Phelps.
BUT WHAT ABOUT BRADY ELLISON?
Eh, don't really know who that is. Brady Ellison?
No, I don't know the name.
Wait, say it again?
MAYBE THAT'S BECAUSE ELLISON MEDALED IN ARCHERY.
FORMER OLYMPIAN RUTH ROWE KNOWS WHAT IT'S LIKE TO STAND IN THE SHADOWS OF THE SWIMMERS, SPRINTERS, AND GYMNASTS. SHE DID IT IN 1984.
IN 2012, SHE SEES HER SPORT, ON THE RISE.
I think it's coming to the public's awareness. The Hunger Games and Brave and now being the Olympic Games, people can see what it's like.
A RATINGS BULLSEYE, BACKS THAT UP. ARCHERY AVERAGED ABOUT 1.5 MILLION VIEWERS ON CABLE FOR N-B-C.
BUT NOT ALL NICHE SPORTS WERE AS LUCKY WITH T-V TIME. FENCING GOT A MERE TWO AND A HALF HOURS, AND THOSE CLOSE TO THE SPORT SAY THAT BELIES AMERICAN INTEREST.
We just participated in the national championships in Anaheim, California, and there were 70 thousand fencers there participating so it is growing in the U.S and I think it has base to grow more.
ENTHUSIASM AMONG RAYMOND FINKLEMAN'S STUDENTS AT THIS WASHINGTON COMMUNITY CENTER IS PERHAPS BUOYED BY AN OLYMPIC HOPEFUL IN THEIR PRESENCE.
Right now I'm looking at Rio 2016. That's my goal right now.
KAT HOLMES RANKS AMONG THE WORLD'S TOP JUNIOR FENCERS. SHE'S USED TO HER SPORT FLYING UNDER THE RADAR.
You talk to somebody and they're like, Oh right foil, right, foil? and you're like yeah and those two words epee and maybe they'll get sabre.
THAT HASN'T STOPPED HER FROM KEEPING HER FOCUS. JUST LIKE COMPETITORS IN A HOST OF OTHER OVERLOOKED OLYMPIC SPORTS, THE MOST DEDICATED ATHLETES KNOW THE MEDIA ATTENTION MAY NEVER BE EQUAL. BUT THE MEDALS, ARE.
IN WASHINGTON, I'M KARIN CAIFA.
