This is the highest pick the Red Wings have had since 1991 when they selected Martin Lapointe at 10th overall. The year before that, in 1990, Keith Primeau was selected 3rd overall by Detroit. Primeau is the last Red Wings player to be taken within the top 10.

Barring any trades, here are all the Red Wings draft positions this year:

Round 1: 9th overall -- Red Wings selected F Michael Rasmussen
Round 2: 38th overall
Round 3: 71st overall (from Florida in Thomas Vanek trade)
Round 3: 79th overall (from Toronto as Mike Babcock compensation)
Round 3: 83rd overall (from New York Rangers in Brendan Smith trade)
Round 3: 88th overall (from Chicago by way of Carolina and Chicago in Tomas Jurco trade)
Round 4: 100th overall
Round 5: 131st overall
Round 6: 162nd overall
Round 6: 164th overall (from Florida in Jakub Kindl trade)
Round 7: 193rd overall

Note: The Red Wings originally had the 66th overall pick in Round 3, but that pick goes to the Arizona Coyotes as part of a trade involving Maxim Letunov.

Last year the Red Wings selected Russian right wing Evgeny Svechnikov at 19th overall. He had 51 points in 74 games played this season with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins.
