Nancy Lieberman will become the first woman to be head coach of a men's professional basketball team, ClickOnDetroit.com has learned.
Thursday or Friday, Lieberman, the Hall of Famer and former Detroit Shock coach, will be named coach of the NBA D-League Frisco expansion franchise, which starts play in 2010.
The new club, owned by Donnie Nelson and Evan Wyly, will also announce at the press conference that former NBA coach Del Harris will be the general manager and former NBA player Spud Webb will be president of basketball operations.
This groundbreaking decision is almost old hat for Lieberman, 51. She played summer league with NBA stars from the L.A. Lakers and Utah Jazz. Lieberman was also the first female player in the all-male United States Basketball League. She played in that league for two seasons.
Lieberman will leave ESPN, where she was a basketball analyst for both the NBA and WNBA, for her new gig.
For the record, Stephanie Ready was the first female coach on a men's professional team. She was an assistant coach for the D-League's Greenville Groove from 2001-2003.
