The equipment manager for the NBA's Indiana Pacers will return to metro Detroit to face a court of law after he allegedly exposed himself at a prestigious Birmingham hotel.
Police say Joe Qatato (pictured, left) was standing alone, naked in front of an upper-floor window of The Townsend Hotel on Townsend Street performing a sex act.
The alleged indecent exposure incident happened Tuesday, the morning of game six of the Eastern Conference finals against the Detroit Pistons. The Pistons defeated the Pacers that night, 69-65, winning the series 4-2.
Qatato was brought to the Pacers by Larry Bird, president of basketball operations. The two were reportedly friends when Bird played for the Boston Celtics.
Qatato described his relationship with the legendary player in a 1998 interview with an Indianapolis station.
"At one point in time I asked him, 'Would you want someone to rebound for you and help you out?' He said, 'Yeah, that'd be great.' So, it became a ritual for us to do that every day," said Qatato.
Officials at the Townsend said they were not aware of Qatato's alleged actions.
The Pacers issued a statement in response to the charges.
"We're aware of the charges, and after the outcome of the court date, the matter will be handled internally. We will not comment further," said David Benner, team spokesman.
Qatato is expected to appear at a Birmingham court on the misdemeanor charge on June 23.
