Miami Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt is expected to resign Tuesday, according to a published report.

The Miami Herald reported Monday night that the decision was made after Wannstedt met with owner Wayne Huizenga earlier in the day.

Wannstedt, who joined the Dolphins as an assistant in 1999 under then-head coach Jimmy Johnson, took over the club in 2000. Wannstedt ends his coaching tenure in Miami with a 42-31 record. His overall NFL coaching record stands at 82-87 in the regular season, including a stint with the Chicago Bears.

Defensive coordinator Jim Bates will be named the interim head coach at an afternoon news conference at the team's Davie training facility on Tuesday, according to the newspaper. Bates, who has been an NFL assistant since 1991, is a former head coach for the now defunct USFL San Antonio Gunslingers.

The Dolphins, who are 1-8, have endured one hardship after another this season beginning with the shocking retirement of running back Ricky Williams. Two weeks ago Miami was embarrassed, 41-14, by the New York Jets on national television. This past Sunday, Arizona rallied for a last-second win to beat the Dolphins at Pro Player Stadium to end a 17-game road losing streak.
