Ann Arbor, MI -- Chad Henne tossed three touchdown passes to lead the 14th-ranked Michigan Wolverines past the Eastern Michigan Eagles, 55-0, in a non-conference matchup at Michigan Stadium.Max Martin rushed for 117 yards with two touchdowns, while Jason Avant hauled in eight passes for 93 yards and two scores for the Wolverines (2-1), who bounced back from a home loss to Notre Dame a week ago to improve to 20-0 all- time versus the Mid-American Conference. Michigan, which recorded its first shutout since blanking the Fighting Irish back in September 2003, also moved to 21-5 following a loss under head coach Lloyd Carr, who picked up his 60th win at the "Big House." Carr is also just three victories shy of becoming the third Wolverines coach to amass 100 wins, joining Fielding H. Yost (165-29-10) and Bo Shembechler (194-48-5).
Matt Bohnet completed 13-of-25 passes for 118 yards with an interception for Eastern Michigan (1-2), which remained winless in 19 meetings with the Big Ten and fell to 0-7 against Michigan. This one was never in doubt, as Michigan matched a school-record with 28 points in the first quarter. Steve Breaston's 72-yard punt return set up the Wolverines' first score, as Martin punched it in from one-yard out. Martin then added a 10-yard scoring run to put Michigan up 14-0 just four minutes into the contest. After another stalled Eastern Michigan drive, Henne led a six-play, 51-yard series culminating with a 14-yard scoring strike to Avant. Henne was 4-of-5 on the march for 44 yards. Henne, who ended the game 13-of-19 for 147 yards, then capped the big stanza with another touchdown pass to Avant, this one from 26-yards out to put the Wolverines ahead 28-0. Michigan last scored 28 points in a quarter back in 2000 versus Rice. Things got no better for the Eagles in the second quarter, as Brian Thompson hauled in his first-ever touchdown, a six-yard reception from Henne to make it 35-0. Then, as Eastern Michigan was driving, Bohnet tossed an interception at the Michigan 11. That set up a 37-yard field goal from Garret Rivas and the Wolverines had a 38-point advantage heading into the locker room. Michigan added another field goal in the third quarter, before Jerome Jackson's seven-yard touchdown run capped an 11-play, 88-yard drive to put the Wolverines up 48-0 with 13:48 remaining in the game. Alijah Bradley's one-yard plunge capped the scoring for the Wolverines with 8:37 left and pushed the lead to 55. Game Notes Michigan gets its Big Ten slate underway next week at Wisconsin...Eastern Michigan will head to Central Michigan next week...Michigan has outscored the Eagles 114-20 in the last two meetings.
