Stocco's Late TD Lifts Wisconsin Over Michigan

POSTED: Saturday, September 24, 2005

John Stocco scored on a quarterback draw in the game's waning moments, as the Wisconsin Badgers orchestrated a late comeback to upset 14th-ranked Michigan 23-20 at Camp Randall Stadium.

Running back Ryan Calhoun had 155 yards and a touchdown on the ground and added 59 receiving yards for Wisconsin (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten), which beat the Wolverines for the first time since 1994 and won its ninth straight home game.

Chad Henne was 16-of-34 for 258 yards with a pair of touchdowns -- including a long flee-flicker TD pass to Mario Manningham that recaptured the lead briefly for the Wolverines in the fourth quarter -- but Michigan (2-2, 0-1) was not able to pull out the win despite leading for the majority of the contest.

After trailing the entire day, Wisconsin fought back on the strength of its defense to take a 16-13 fourth-quarter lead. Johnny White forced a Max Martin fumble deep in Wolverine territory, leading to a six-yard Calhoun TD run that sent the home crowd into a frenzy.

Michigan would regain control of the fans and the game, however, with a trick play a few series later. Morgan Trent intercepted Stocco to give Michigan the ball at its own 39-yard line. Two plays later, Henne hit Manningham on a 49- yard flee-flicker pass for the touchdown to put the Wolverines up 20-16.

Wisconsin surged back one last time in the game's final moments, mounting an 11-play, 52-yard drive that put the Badgers up 23-20 with 24 seconds to play. Facing a 3rd-and-goal from the five, Stocco weaved his way into the end zone on a quarterback draw for the game-winning touchdown.

Michigan's last-gasp attempt fell short, giving the Badgers the upset.

Michigan used a bit of fortune to capture the early lead. The Wolverines had worked their way down to the Wisconsin 21-yard line early in the second quarter, but Henne was sacked for 11 yards and Garrett Rivas missed the ensuing 48-yard field goal attempt. The Badgers were flagged for roughing the kicker on the play, however, and Rivas capitalized by hitting a 44-yarder on his second try.

Henne found Kevin Grady for a 19-yard strike later in the quarter to move the Wolverines deep into Badger territory, then hooked up with Jason Avant for a four-yard touchdown completion to put Michigan ahead by 10.

Wisconsin's Taylo Mehlhaff and Rivas then traded field goals to make it a 13-3 Wolverine halftime lead.

Mehlhaff capped an 11-play, 37-yard third quarter with a 43-yard field goal to cut into the Michigan lead at the 8:59 mark, and added a 27-yarder with 12:47 remaining in the game to make it 13-9.

Game Notes

Wisconsin entered the contest ranked fourth in rushing defense, having surrendered just 39.7 yards per game on the ground on average...Michigan had won 36 of its last 37 conference openers coming into Saturday's game...Manningham and Avant each had over a 100 receiving yards for the Wolverines...Stocco finished 15-of-32 for 147 yards and one interception.
