EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Garrett Rivas atoned for a miss in the final minute of the fourth quarter with a 35-yard field goal in overtime, as Michigan posted a 34-31 victory over 11th-ranked Michigan State at Spartan Stadium.Mike Hart ran for 218 yards and a touchdown for Michigan (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten), which bounced back from a 23-20 loss at Wisconsin last week. The setback also knocked the Wolverines out of the rankings for the first time since 1998, but they could make a return after this victory.John Goss missed a pair of field goals for Michigan State (4-1, 1-1), including a 37-yard try on the opening possession of overtime.
The Wolverines then gained seven yards on two plays and Rivas came on to drill the winning kick on third down.Chad Henne completed 26-of-35 passes for 256 yards with three touchdowns for Michigan, which has won four straight against its bitter state rival, including a 45-37, triple-overtime thriller last year -- in which Hart ran for 224 yards.Drew Stanton threw for 282 yards, completing 20-of-30 passes with one touchdown and an interception for the Spartans.Michigan State had a chance to take a lead early in the fourth quarter, but Goss missed a 23-yard field goal after a 16-play, 90-yard drive. The Wolverines answered with the go-ahead touchdown.Hart broke free on the first play with a 64-yard run to put Michigan at the Spartan 16. Three plays and a penalty later, Hart scored on a one-yard run to give his team a 31-24 lead with 11:29 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Spartans were forced to punt and Michigan was in position to increase its lead with a first down at the Michigan State 24. But on third down, Henne was hit by Bobby Jones and fumbled. Defensive lineman Domata Peko picked up the loose ball and rumbled 74 yards down the right sideline for the tying touchdown. The play was reviewed, as Henne's arm appeared to be moving forward as he was hit, but the call on the field stood and Kyle Mayer replaced Goss for the extra point that knotted the contest at 31-31 with 6:43 to play.Grant Mason returned the ensuing kickoff 32 yards to the Michigan 40 and the Wolverines marched 50 yards, converting a pair of short fourth downs, to set up a potential winning kick.Hart carried the first four plays for 22 yards and Michigan soon faced 4th- and-inches from the Michigan State 38, but a sneak by Henne picked up the first down. Hart then resumed the workload and carried three times for nine yards before bulling through the line on 4th-and-1 for eight yards.Three more Hart carries got the ball to the Michigan State 10-yard line for Rivas, who sent a 27-yard field goal try wide right. The Spartans still had 39 seconds left, but could not mount a serious threat and the game went to overtime. This marked the first time since 1968 that Michigan State entered the game as a ranked team and Michigan did not, but the Wolverines looked more impressive early with the first 14 points of the game. The Spartans pinned Michigan at its own two-yard line after a punt, but Henne directed a 10-play drive for a touchdown. A 45-yard run by Hart keyed the series and Henne capped it with a two-yard scoring toss to Jason Avant with 8:23 left in the first quarter. The Wolverines got the ball right back and scored just 80 seconds later when Henne found Mario Manningham with a 43-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-0.Michigan State answered with its first sustained drive. Stanton keyed the 10- play, 80-yard series with passes of 13 and 31 yards to convert a pair of third downs, and he finished it himself with a four-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter. The Spartans got the ball back after a punt and needed two big plays to drive from their own 35 to the Michigan 27, but a trick play failed when Willis Barringer picked off a pass by wide receiver Jerramy Scott near the goal line. The Wolverines quickly went the other way and were about to settle for a field goal, but a Michigan State penalty for roughing the kicker resulted in a first down. Henne took advantage and put his team into the end zone with a five-yard pass to Brian Thompson for a 21-7 lead.Back came the Spartans with a 78-yard march for a touchdown. Stanton kept it alive with a 31-yard toss to Scott on 3rd-and-15 and Jehuu Caulcrick did the rest with three straight carries, scoring on a one-yard run to make it a seven-point game. The Michigan State defense forced a quick punt and Stanton needed just two plays to tie the game as he hit Kerry Reed with a wide receiver screen that turned into a 61-yard touchdown pass. The Wolverines, though, responded with a 20-yard field goal from Rivas only nine seconds before the break to head into the locker room with a 24-21 lead.Michigan started the second half with the ball, but SirDarean Adams picked off a Henne pass on the first series and the Spartans turned it into a 26-yard field goal by Goss to tie it.Stanton turned the ball over near midfield with a fumble after he sacked midway through the third quarter, but Michigan failed to take advantage of the field position and punted it away.Game Notes:The home team has won 11 of the last 14 meetings, with the lone road victories coming Saturday and in 1997 and 2003 by the Wolverines...Michigan leads the all-time series 65-28-5, including a mark of 32-19-2 since the schools started playing for the Paul Bunyan Trophy in 1953...Barringer also picked off a desperation pass late in the first half...Michigan played without return specialist Steve Breaston, who sat out with a shoulder injury...Avant had 10 catches for 96 yards to lead the Wolverines.
