NCAA Game Summary - Indiana At Michigan

POSTED: Saturday, November 12, 2005

Chad Henne threw three touchdown passes to lead the 21st-ranked Michigan Wolverines to a 41-14 rout of the Indiana Hoosiers during Big Ten action from Michigan Stadium.

Kevin Grady added 94 yards and two touchdowns rushing for Michigan (7-3, 5-2 Big Ten), which scored all of its points in the first two quarters. Henne completed 17-of-24 attempts for 174 yards, while Jason Avant paced the receiving corps with five catches for 66 yards and a score, as the Wolverines have won four in a row.

Blake Powers struggled under center for Indiana (4-6, 1-6), completing 10- of-19 passes for 112 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Powers had little support from the running game, which netted a mere 63 yards for the Hoosiers, who have dropped five straight.

Indiana started the day well, as Powers dropped back and hit Jahkeen Gilmore with a 42-yard touchdown pass three minutes into the game. However, the Wolverines answered with two touchdowns before the end of the opening quarter for the 14-7 lead. Henne found Tyler Ecker from five yards out midway through the frame, then connected with Avant minutes later on a seven-yarder.

Michigan kept rolling in the second quarter, piling on four straight touchdowns to open up a commanding 41-7 advantage at halftime. Grady reached the end zone on runs of one yard and 32 yards, followed by a six-yard scamper from Jerome Jackson. Henne capped the scoring barrage with an 11-yard strike to Steve Breaston with 23 seconds remaining in the half.

The Wolverines applied the brakes to the offense in the second half, while the Maize and Blue defense held Indiana scoreless throughout the third quarter.

The Hoosiers finally broke through for their second and final score midway through the fourth quarter, as backup quarterback Graeme McFarland connected with Brandon Walker-Roby on a seven-yard touchdown pass.

Michigan rolled up 425 yards and 26 first downs in the victory, while Indiana managed just 210 yards and nine first downs. The Hoosiers converted only 3- of-14 third-down opportunities, and were further stymied by eight penalties for 73 yards.

Game Notes:

Breaston surpassed Anthony Carter in the Michigan annals for career returns and return yardage on special teams...Henne eclipsed 2,000 yards passing for the second consecutive season...The Wolverines improved their series record versus Indiana to 49-9, while coach Lloyd Carr moved to 9-0 against the Hoosiers...Indiana lost for just the second time since 2003 in games in which it has scored first -- a span of 23 games.
