Masters: Tiger Prowls Into History
Woods Wins By 2 Strokes, Now Holds All 4 Major Titles
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- With a perfectly judged birdie putt on the final hole, Tiger Woods emphatically stepped into history by winning the 2001 Masters Sunday.
Surviving a hard-charging David Duval and the never-say-die work of Phil Mickelson, Woods carded another solid 4-under-par 68 to post a winning score of 16-under -- two shots ahead of Duval, three in front of Mickelson. With his second Green Jacket, the 25-year-old Woods becomes the first golfer to hold all four professional major titles at the same time.
"Right now, it's hard to explain," Woods said in the Butler Cabin during the jacket ceremony. "It's an eerie calmness. I don't feel ecstatic yet. It hasn't sunk in. But I'm proud I've succeeded in what I set out to accomplish."
"It was pretty special to have them there again," Woods said.It wasn't easy for Woods, the No. 1 ranked player in the world who won the U.S. Open, the British Open and the PGA Championship last year. Duval put pressure on him from the get-go, jumping out to a great start -- dropping five strokes to par over the first 10 holes. And Woods even had a rare slip-up -- missing a gimme birdie putt on 15.But over the final holes, his competition failed to knock in key putts that would've probably forced a playoff.Duval faltered over the final three holes. After driving over the back of the 16th green, he missed his par putt to drop back to 14-under. Then, he had makeable birdie putts on both 17 and 18 -- from 12 feet on the 17th and 5 feet on the final hole -- and slid both of them just wide.Mickelson had another up and down day -- finishing with a 2-under 70. Gonig into Amen Corner, he was one stroke behind Woods. But on the 11th, Mickelson was in the trees off the tee, then missed an 8-footer for par.
Meanwhile, Woods almost holed his 149-yard approach (pictured, right), and tapped in for birdie -- a two-stroke swing that gave Woods a three-stroke edge over his playing partner. But Woods gave a stroke right back on 12, driving over the thin green into the back bunker, then missing his par putt to drop to 14-under.While Duval was birdieing 15 to move to 15-under, Woods had an easy tap-in on 13 to get there as well.Things got very interesting again at 15, when Woods inexplicably missed his easy birdie putt after a perfect approach that left him a good chance for eagle. Mickelson, meanwhile, got up and down from the right-side bunker to card a birdie and get to 14-under -- again, one stroke back. But like Duval, the 16th undid Mickelson's hopes as well. His drive sat atop the steep ridge above the hole. His lag went about 6 feet by, and he missed the par putt to drop back to 13-under.Woods came perilously close to losing his lead on the 17th when his approach rolled back off the front. But he almost holed his chip, and tapped in for par.So, he came to the 18th tee needing just a par to win. He did one better than that -- with a perfect drive, an approach past the hole about 18 feet, and a perfect putt. When it fell, he pumped his fist in typical fashion, and then uncharacteristically became emotional -- covering his face with his cap as he shed a tear.
