Puck Patrol: Stajan Keeps Leafs Playoff Hopes Alive
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Sports Network) - Matt Stajan lit the lamp with 1:08 remaining in overtime and also scored in regulation, as the Toronto Maple Leafs heightened their playoff hopes with a 4-3 win over the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum. Darcy Tucker and Mats Sundin also scored while Jean- Sebastien Aubin turned away 23 shots in net for Toronto, which pulled within three points of idle Tampa Bay for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Robert Nilsson, Trent Hunter and Shawn Bates had a goal apiece, as the Islanders had a modest two-game winning streak snapped. Garth Snow made 27 saves in defeat.Canadiens 4, Bruins 3
BOSTON - Alex Kovalev tallied two goals and an assist as the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Boston Bruins, 4-3, at TD Banknorth Garden. Jan Bulis added a goal and two helpers for the Canadiens, who have won two of four since their eight-game winning streak. David Aebischer made 25 saves in the win. Montreal, which sits in the seventh playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with 93 points, leads idle Tampa Bay by four points. Montreal has just two games left on its schedule while the Lightning have three remaining, two against Carolina. Atlanta, meanwhile, sits in the ninth spot with 87 points and three games to play. Patrice Bergeron scored twice and Yan Stastny also netted a goal for the Bruins, who have lost four straight and have just one game remaining on the season. ATLANTA - Marian Hossa had two goals and two assists to inch Atlanta closer to its first playoff appearance in a 5-3 win over Washington at Philips Arena. Vyacheslav Kozlov had a goal and an assist and Ilya Kovalchuk and Peter Bondra each had a goal for the Thrashers, who with the win move two points behind Tampa Bay for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Each team has three games remaining, none of which are against each other. Mike Dunham stopped 22 shots for Atlanta, which has won its last three games. Alexander Ovechkin, with a goal and an assist in the game for Washington, now has 50 goals and 102 points and becomes only the second rookie in history to reach 50 goals and 100 points in one season. Teemu Selanne achieved the feat in the 1992-93 season. Also, Ovechkin became only the fourth rookie to tally at least 50 goals in a season, joining Selanne (76), Mike Bossy (53) and Joe Nieuwendyk (51). COLUMBUS, Ohio - Sergei Fedorov scored a goal and added an assist as the Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the St. Louis Blues, 4-1, at Nationwide Arena. Pascal Leclaire made 26 saves for Columbus, which ended a three-game losing streak. Mark Hartigan, Aaron Johnson and Manny Malhotra also tallied for the Blue Jackets. OTTAWA - Joe Nieuwendyk scored the game winner and Roberto Luongo set the all-time Panthers' win record in a 5-4 Florida overtime victory over Ottawa, which clinched the Northeast Division title nonetheless, at Scotiabank Place. Ottawa, which finished 29-9-3 overall at home, remains atop the Eastern Conference with 111 points. Second place Carolina trails the Senators by two points with three games left, two of which are at home. With 107 career wins with the Panthers, Luongo surpassed John Vanbiesbrouck for the franchise record. Olli Jokinen notched a goal and an assist for the Panthers, who have won two of the last three. Alexei Semenov, Jonathan Sim and Martin Gelinas also scored for Florida. Luongo made 46 saves. Daniel Alfredsson and Mike Fisher both posted a goal and an assist for the Senators, who have dropped five of six. Jason Spezza and Peter Schaefer added the other goals. EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Zach Parise scored two goals and Martin Brodeur made 33 saves as the New Jersey Devils defeated the Philadelphia Flyers, 4-1, at Continental Airlines Arena. Scott Gomez tallied a goal and an assist and Brian Gionta registered three assists for the Devils, who tied a season-high with nine straight wins. The Devils, who clinched their ninth consecutive playoff berth on Tuesday, have two games left in the regular season. With the win, New Jersey has 97 points and is tied with Philadelphia for the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Both teams sit three points behind the Atlantic Division leading New York Rangers, who lost to Pittsburgh on Thursday. Montreal, which defeated Boston on Thursday, is four points behind both the Devils and Flyers with two games left. Nicholas Dimitrakos tallied Philadelphia's only goal and Robert Esche stopped 32 shots for the Flyers, who have lost two of three and three of their last five games.Penguins 5, Rangers 3
PITTSBURGH - Sidney Crosby had a goal and three assists and Colby Armstrong scored two third-period goals to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins over the New York Rangers, 5-3, at Mellon Arena. Armstrong also added an assist and Sergei Gonchar had a goal and an assist for the Penguins, who ended a two-game slide and won for just the second time in six games. NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Mike Sillinger scored two goals as the Nashville Predators defeated the Minnesota Wild, 4-2, at the Gaylord Entertainment Center. Dan Hamhuis and Shea Weber tallied a goal and an assist and Chris Mason made 27 saves for Nashville, which has won four straight games. The win secured the fourth seed and home-ice advantage in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs for the Predators. CHICAGO - Brendan Shanahan recorded his 17th career hat trick with an assist as Detroit downed Chicago, 7-3, at the United Center, and set an NHL record with 11 straight road wins. The win helped the Red Wings break the previous mark of 10 consecutive road victories that was jointly held by Buffalo, St. Louis and New Jersey. Henrik Zetterberg scored a pair of goals for the Red Wings, who won their sixth straight game overall. Tomas Holmstrom also scored, and Nicklas Lidstrom added a goal and three assists. CALGARY, Alberta - Miikka Kiprusoff turned aside all 23 shots he faced to record his league-leading 10th shutout as Calgary clinched the Northwest Division after a 2-0 win over Colorado at Pengrowth Saddledome. Rookie Dion Phaneuf and Tony Amonte both scored for the Flames, who grabbed the division title for the first time since the lockout-shortened 1994-95 season. Calgary has won four of its last five contests. Jose Theodore took a tough loss after allowing just one goal on 24 shots faced in just his third game as a member of the Colorado Avalanche. The Avalanche, who have lost two of their last three, sit in the seventh playoff spot in the Western Conference, three points behind the Sharks, who defeated Vancouver Thursday. However, since the Canucks lost, the Avalanche officially clinched a playoff spot. EDMONTON, Alberta - Ales Hemsky scored late in the third period to lift the Edmonton Oilers to a 2-1 victory over the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim at Rexall Place. Ethan Moreau scored the other goal for the Oilers, who won for the first time in three games. Dwayne Roloson made 23 saves for Edmonton, which secured a playoff berth due to the Vancouver Canucks losing against San Jose. The Oilers currently hold the eighth spot in the Western Conference with 93 points and trail seventh-place Colorado by one point. GLENDALE, Ariz. - Derek Morris scored his second goal in as many games as Phoenix tallied three special team goals in the second period for a 3-0 victory over Los Angeles. Keith Ballard and Fredrik Sjostrom also scored for the Coyotes, who scored twice on the power play and once short- handed in the second period. Curtis Joseph stopped all 32 shots he faced for his third shutout against LA this season. Matthew Carle had a goal and an assist and Joe Thornton added three assists in the win for the Sharks, who with the win clinch a playoff spot and move into the fifth spot in the Western Conference with 97 points, one ahead of Anaheim, which lost to Edmonton. Evgeni Nabokov stopped 17 shots and added an assist in the win for San Jose, which is on a season- high seven game winning streak. Todd Bertuzzi had a goal and two assists and Ed Jovanovski added a goal and an assist for the Canucks, who have dropped their last three games and are now eliminated from playoff contention. Alexander Auld stopped 23 shots in the loss.
