Ann Arbor, MI -- (Sports Network) - Mike Hart ran for 116 yards and three touchdowns on just 19 carries, leading 10th-ranked Michigan to a 41-17 victory over Central Michigan at Michigan Stadium.
Kevin Grady also scored on the ground for the Wolverines (2-0), who outrushed Central Michigan 252-16. Michigan has won all three meetings against CMU and improved to 21-0 all-time against teams from the Mid-American Conference.
"We got a lot of yards rushing, but they weren't easy yards," said Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr. "I am pleased with a lot of the things that we did. We had a good scheme offensively."
The Wolverines, after opening the season at home with Vanderbilt and Central Michigan, will have their first big test next week on the road against Notre Dame.
Dan LeFevour threw for 153 yards and two touchdowns for Central Michigan (0-2), which lost by just seven last week against Boston College.
Michigan took the opening kickoff and used a nice run-pass mix to march 63 yards for a touchdown. A 14-yard pass from Chad Henne to Mario Manningham early in the series put the Wolverines across midfield and they soon faced 4th-and-7 on the Central Michigan 26. Henne then hit Tyler Ecker for eight yards and Hart did the rest, carrying four straight times -- the last for a four-yard score.
Henne needed to complete just 11-of-19 passes for 113 yards in the victory.
The Chippewas took their initial possession right at Michigan, driving from their own 38 to the Wolverine 14 with the help of a 25-yard run from Ontario Sneed. LaMarr Woodley then stepped up for the Michigan defense on the next play with a sack of LeFevour, who fumbled to give the Wolverines possession at their own 49.
After a delay of about an hour because of lightning late in the first quarter, the Wolverines added to their lead with an 18-yard touchdown run by Hart. The score came one play after the Chippewas were called for offside on 4th-and-1.
Sneed fumbled on Central Michigan's second play after the kickoff and the Wolverines regained possession at the Chippewa 33. Six plays later, Michigan was back in the end zone as Grady scored on a three-yard run early in the second quarter to make it 21-0.
The Chippewas answered with an 80-yard drive for a score. LeFevour connected on throws of 13 and 15 yards before finding Justin Gardner with a 38-yard touchdown pass.
Michigan followed with a nine-play march that ended in a 38-yard field goal by Garrett Rivas for a 24-7 lead and Central Michigan tacked on three at the end of the half when Rick Albreski booted a 29-yard field goal.
The Chippewas mounted a threat to start the second half, reaching the Michigan 34, but LeFevour was sacked on 4th-and-7 and the Wolverines took over on their own 49. Five plays later, Hart found the end zone from two yards away to increase the lead to 31-10.
Rivas tacked on a 40-yard field goal late in the third quarter and Max Pollack returned an interception 12 yards for a score early in the fourth before LeFevour threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Damien Linson for the final margin.
