Michigan Doubles Up Minnesota To Reclaim Little Brown Jug

POSTED: 12:45 am EDT October 1, 2006

(Sports Network) - Chad Henne completed 17-of-24 passes for 284 yards and three touchdowns, as sixth-ranked Michigan defeated Minnesota, 28-14, and reclaimed possession of the Little Brown Jug at the Metrodome.

Mario Manningham caught five passes for 131 yards and a touchdown for Michigan (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten), which has won 17 of the last 18 Little Brown Jug games and 34 of the last 37.

Adrian Arrington hauled in three passes for 59 yards and two touchdowns while Mike Hart ran for 195 yards on 31 carries in the win.

Michigan has now defeated Minnesota in 11 straight games at the Metrodome.

"It's great to have the Little Brown Jug back," said Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr. "I give Minnesota a lot of credit. They were down 21-7 at the half and they really fought hard throughout the third quarter."

Bryan Cupito went 17-of-34 for 215 yards and two touchdowns for Minnesota (2-3, 0-2), which defeated Michigan last year to snap a 16-game losing streak to the Wolverines in Little Brown Jug games.

Logan Payne finished with six receptions for 104 yards and two touchdowns while Amir Pinnix had 91 rushing yards in the loss.

"I thought we played one of our better ballgames," said Minnesota head coach Glen Mason. "We were playing a very experienced and good Michigan team. Obviously, we made some mistakes, but we made some adjustments and I'm really proud of how the team got better as the game went on."

The Wolverines scored on the opening drive of the game to take an early 7-0 lead. Henne found Arrington wide open in the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown pass to cap a 10-play, 80-yard drive.

Michigan increased its lead to 14-0 with 14:18 remaining in the second quarter after Henne found Arrington over the middle for a 38-yard touchdown pass. The Wolverines went 77 yards in just over two minutes on the scoring drive.

With 7:49 left in the second quarter, Minnesota made it 14-7. Cupito completed a 21-yard TD pass to Payne, who bobbled the football but held on in the left corner of the end zone. Originally the officials ruled that Payne did not have possession, but after the play was reviewed, it was ruled that he did.

Michigan though continued to tear apart the secondary of the Golden Gophers as Henne connected with Manningham for a 41-yard TD pass over the middle to make it 21-7 with 3:30 left in the first half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Michigan had a chance to increase its lead early in the fourth, but failed after Garrett Rivas pushed a 22-yard field goal attempt wide left.

The Wolverines upped their lead with 5:27 left in the fourth quarter after Kevin Grady scored a one-yard TD to make it 28-7.

Minnesota did answer after Grady's score and made it 28-14 with 3:12 left in the contest. Cupito hit Payne on a quick slant and Payne ran into the end zone up the right sideline for the touchdown.

The Golden Gophers then recovered an onsides kick and moved the ball down to the Michigan seven-yard line. After four plays, Minnesota was unable to score and turned the ball over on downs.
