DETROIT -

City officials called a foul on a plan to show Game 3 of the World Series between the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants on the site of the Tigers' old home.

In a statement, the city said organizers of the event where Tiger Stadium once stood failed to contact the city in a timely manner or follow guidelines for holding events on public property.

"Although the City appreciates the enthusiasm for the Tigers and the community spirit displayed by this group, we have informed them that this viewing cannot be allowed," the city said.

The plan included showing the game on a 20-foot screen. It's being played Saturday at nearby Comerica Park.

Supporters on the Facebook page for Historic Detroit say everybody "thought it was a great idea ... except for the city."

Corktown Cinema program director Brandon Walley says he hopes to hold an event at the site before the series ends.
