DETROIT -

Rain is spitting on a cool, dark downtown. Yet, there’s no feeling this morning of gloom as the calendar ticks through autumn and into winter.

The gloom is on Chicago's south side.

The Detroit Tigers have won the American League Central Division Championship and playoff baseball will be coming to a sold-out and electric Comerica Park.

“Welcome to the D shop,” chimed a Tigers employee who greeted the five fans standing outside the park’s team shop doors at 4:55 a.m.

Just hours after securing the division in Kansas City, Local 4 cameras were there as employees unpacked division champions t-shirts and hats.

By 4:58 a.m., Kathy Sovoda from Lincoln Park had the first championship t-shirt in hand. It’s for her grandson to wear to school this morning and it’s a surprise. “I’ll tell him, this looks better than the shirt you have on, go Tigers,” Sovoda said.

Fans this morning snapping up t-shirts and hats say this year’s long, sometimes painful climb to the top makes the championship more satisfying.

One woman was so taken by Tigers playoffs fever, she bought $522 worth of jerseys and other Tigers gear.

The playoff start at Comerica Park this weekend, but The D Shop will be selling Tigers playoffs gear all week long.

“Go Tigers! Tigers all the way to the World Series,” cheered a man driving up to the shop shouted at the top of his lungs.

Let’s hope Local 4 is back live inside the D shop again in the coming weeks with AL Pennant shirts and World Series shirts.
