Michigan-Alabama to open season in prime time
Storied programs to meet for first time in regular season
Michigan and Alabama will meet to kick off the 2012 season on Sept. 1 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Michigan's athletic department confirmed the Cowboys Classic is scheduled for an 8 p.m. ET kickoff and is an ABC Sports national broadcast.
The storied programs have met three times, all in postseason games, including the 2000 Orange Bowl. Tom Brady quarterbacked that Wolverines team to an overtime victory, 35-34, and had 369 yards passing and four touchdowns.
Defending national champion Alabama plays Western Kentucky on Sept. 8 while Michigan hosts Air Force.
LSU defeated Oregon in the 2011 Cowboys Classic.
