Ann Arbor's Betsey Armstrong celebrates gold in London

Former U of M goalkeeper Betsey Armstrong helps Team USA win first gold medal in Women's Water Polo

The U.S. Women's Water Polo team won a gold medal at the Olympics for the first time, and Ann Arbor's Betsey Armstrong helped the team get onto the podium.

The team beat Spain 8-5 in the gold medal match Thursday afternoon in London.

The women's team has won an Olympic medal in the Summer Games every time since the sport debuted in 2000, but they have never won gold.

Armstrong, who grew up in Ann Arbor and played for the University of Michigan, helped the team win silver in Beijing in 2008. Armstrong is the team's goalkeeper.

Local 4 learned Armstrong will return to Ann Arbor after the Summer Games are over to be the assistant coach of the water polo team at the University of Michigan. Head coach Matt Anderson made the announcement on Local 4 Wednesday night.

Armstrong has been living in Long Beach, Calif. where the national team trains.
