Tampa Bay Rays' reliever Joel Peralta received an eight-game suspension Thursday after being caught with pine tar inside his glove. The right-hander plans to appeal and will remain active until his case is heard.

Peralta was ejected in the eighth inning of Tuesday's win against the Washington Nationals after home plate umpire and crew chief Tim Tschida said he found "a significant amount of pine tar" inside the pitcher's glove.

Nationals manager Davey Johnson called for the search, as he approached Tschida after Peralta completed his warm-up tosses. The move upset Rays manager Joe Maddon, who felt Johnson displayed poor sportsmanship.
