DETROIT -

The Detroit Red Wings were on the verge of a signature win Sunday, poised to hand the Chicago Blackhawks their first regulation loss before a delay of game penalty led to the tying goal with only 2:02 to play.

Chicago eventually prevailed in a shootout over the Red Wings, who will look to bounce back when they host the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday. Detroit has won only three times in its last 10 games (3-4-3) overall and has dropped the last two meetings against the Avalanche.

Colorado's road woes continued with a 2-1 overtime loss at the league-worst Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday. The Avalanche have won only twice away from home (2-6-3) and each of their last three losses have come beyond regulation. The season debut of Ryan O'Reilly, last season's leading scorer, failed to spark an offense that has produced seven goals in its last four road games. O'Reilly did have a hand in one goal - when he inadvertently deflected a puck into Colorado's net for the tying tally.

ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (8-8-4): Colorado managed only 19 shots in the loss to Columbus. P.A. Parenteau scored, giving him nine on the season and putting him halfway to his total with the New York Islanders last season.

Goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere rejoined the team after attending his mother's funeral in Montreal and will get the start against the Red Wings. Giguere has surrendered 10 goals in three starts this season and has struggled versus Detroit with a 6-13-1-1 record in 24 appearances.

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (10-8-4): With the exception of a 12-goal eruption in back-to-back home wins over Nashville and Vancouver on Feb. 23-24, Detroit has been unable to mount a consistent offensive attack. In the past 12 games, the Red Wings have been held to three or fewer goals 10 times.

Leading scorer Henrik Zetterberg has only one goal in 15 games since registering a hat trick on Feb. 1 and Pavel Datsyuk has not found the net in the last six games following a five-game goal-scoring streak.

O'Reilly had three assists in a 4-3 victory at Detroit on Feb. 25, 2012, and two goals in a 4-2 home victory over the Wings 2 1/2 months earlier.

Datsyuk has 13 goals and 24 assists in 36 games against Colorado.

The Red Wings and Avalanche entered play Monday having allowing a league-high 20 power-play goals.
