According to published reports, Fox Sports Detroit has fired Detroit Red Wings analyst Larry Murphy.

Murphy, a former Red Wings defenseman and NHL Hall of Famer, had worked for the station for the past 10 years. He did analysis before, during and after Red Wings games broadcasted on FSD and often was stationed between the players' benches.

Murphy also did color-commentary when broadcaster Mickey Redmond could not travel with the team on road games.

According to MLive.com, Murphy was shocked by the firing which he found out about last week.

“They said they just needed a change, ratings weren't what they were," he told MLive.com.

As a player, Murphy spent just more than four seasons with Detroit, during which he won two Stanley Cups in 1997 and 1998.

He began his career with the Los Angeles Kings before spending six seasons with the Washington Capitals, a few with the Minnesota North Stars and five with the Pittsburgh Penguins where he won his first two Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992.

Murphy tallied 1,216 points in 1,615 NHL games. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004.
