Detroit native, Cy Young winner Bob Welch dead at 57

Born in Detroit and a star at Hazel Park High School and Eastern Michigan, Bob Welch was a two-time World Series champion during a 17-year major league career with the L.A. Dodgers and Oakland A's.

Welch passed away Tuesday at the age of 57 in California.

Welch overcame a drinking problem to become one of the most dominant pitchers in the 1980s,. He won the 1990 A.L. Cy Young Award with a 27-6 record and a 2.95 ERA. He remains the last Major Leaguer to win 25 games in a single season.

Welch was a two-time All-Star and finished his career with a 211-146 record and a 3.47 ERA.

After he retired in 1994, he became a coach and was pitching coach for the 2001 world champion Arizona Diamondbacks.

Hazel Park High School's baseball field is named in Welch's honor

According to the Contra Costa Times, Welch is survived by two sons, Dylan and Riley, a daughter, Kelly, and former wife Mary Ellen.
