Indians hammer Greene, send Tigers to 4th straight loss

Greene takes first loss as Tiger

DETROIT – The scuffling Tigers lost their fourth straight game Friday as Shane Greene allowed eight earned runs in his first rough outing in Detroit. Cleveland handed Greene his first loss of the season and won the series opener 13-1.

Detroit fell behind in three of its four games against New York this week, and the Indians kept that trend going in the top of the first. After inducing two ground balls right back to the mound to start the game, Greene allowed a single, a walk, and then a double to Brandon Moss that scored two runs.

Moss's double gave young starter Danny Salazar a 2-0 lead before he even toed the rubber.

Salazar got in some trouble in the 1st, giving up singles to Ian Kinsler and Miguel Cabrera before hitting Victor Martinez in the arm with a 94 mph fastball to load the bases. But J.D. Martinez struck out and Yoenis Cespedes flew out to the warning track in center field to let Salazar off the hook.

Cleveland added another run in the 2nd. Lonnie Chisenhall led off with a double, moved to 3rd base on a sac bunt and scored on a sac fly to left.

Nick Castellanos got the Tigers on the board in the bottom half, breaking an 0-9 stretch with a 430-foot blast over the out-of-town scoreboard in right center. Detroit put two more runners on base in the inning, but Cabrera struck out swinging to end the threat.

Cleveland put the game away in the top of the 5th, scoring six runs and chasing Greene with just four innings pitched. Greene allowed three to score before Brad Ausmus brought Alex Wilson in with two runners on.

Wilson's first pitch as a Tiger landed in the right field bleachers for a Moss three-run homer. The blast put the Indians up 9-1.

Neither team scored again until the top of the 8th inning, when Chisenhall took Al Alburquerque deep for a two-run shot to right field. Moss hit his second of the game off of Alburquerque in the 9th to make it 13-1.

Alburquerque has now allowed seven earned runs on six hits and four walks in his last three outings (three innings pitched).

Moss finished the game with two homers and seven RBI.

The lone bright spots for Detroit were Wilson and Kinsler. After allowing the home run to Moss, Wilson pitched three otherwise scoreless innings. Kinsler, meanwhile, broke an 0-14 stretch with a pair of hits and reached base four times.

Salazar finished the game after seven innings, allowing just one run on the solo shot and six hits. He struck out 11 hitters, including Anthony Gose and Alex Avila three times each.

Gose struck out for the 4th time in the 9th inning against Anthony Swarzak.

The Tigers will look to end an ugly four-game losing streak behind Alfredo Simon Saturday as the series with Cleveland continues. Trevor Bauer will bring his 0.95 ERA into Comerica Park for the Tribe.
