Miguel Cabrera named AL Player of the Week

Cabrera hit .520 with 2 HR, 8 RBI in first week of season

DETROIT – Miguel Cabrera was named the AL Player of the Week Monday, taking home MLB's first weekly honor of the 2015 season.

For Cabrera, it's the ninth time he's been named AL Player of the Week since joining the Detroit Tigers in 2008. He also won the NL Player of the Week award four times with the Florida (now Miami) Marlins.

The Tigers' first baseman earned the honor after hitting .520 with two home runs and eight RBI over the first week of the season. Cabrera struck out only once over the first six games (after a 10-pitch at-bat) and slugged .840 thanks to four extra-base hits.

In Detroit's three-game series against the division-rival Cleveland Indians, Cabrera recorded 11 hits in 14 at-bats and knocked in six runs.

The award was announced during Monday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Cabrera went on to record his fourth straight multi-hit game, knocking in his ninth run of the season and scoring twice.

He currently leads the league with a .517 average, .576 on-base percentage and 1.403 OPS. His nine RBI are tied for the most in baseball.
