Miguel Cabrera placed on DL with calf strain

Cabrera expected to miss 6 weeks

DETROIT – Detroit Tigers' first baseman Miguel Cabrera was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a left calf strain, the team announced. Manager Brad Ausmus said it's a Grade 3 strain and will sideline Cabrera for about six weeks.

Cabrera, who injured the calf in Detroit's 8-6 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night, is hitting .350 with 15 home runs and 54 RBI through 77 games.

This is Cabrera's first trip to the DL in his 13-year career.

The Tigers purchased the contract of infielder Jefry Marte from the Toledo Mud Hens to take Cabrera's spot on the roster. Victor Martinez will bat third in the order on Sunday.

Detroit is 40-39 on the season and six games behind the Kansas City Royals in the AL Central Division.
