Scherzer struggled in his only start during the stretch, allowing seven earned runs, which was more than he allowed in his previous six starts combined. On Tuesday he will face an Oakland Athletics (31-20) team that smashed the Tigers 10-0 on Memorial Day.

Monday marked the third day in a row that the Tigers have allowed 10 or more runs, as the AL Central leaders play the role of proverbial punching bag for AL West opponents. What was previously the best starting rotation in baseball has failed to even keep the Tigers in games over the last eight days.
Scherzer will look to turn things around against an Oakland team that he last saw in the American League Division Series last October. The righty pitched seven strong innings to win Game 1 and famously escaped a bases-loaded jam in Game 4 to get the victory in relief.
Oakland will send out ace Sonny Gray as he looks to record his 11th quality start in a row to start the 2014 season. Gray owns a 1.99 ERA and defeated the Tigers in Game 2 of the ALDS before taking a tough loss in the decisive Game 5.
Detroit is one game behind Oakland in the battle for top team in the AL.
