Tigers beat Washington Nationals 2-1

Porcello throws 5 shutout innings, Tigers top Nats

LAKELAND, Fla. – Rick Porcello pitched five shutout innings and the Detroit Tigers beat the Washington Nationals 2-1 Sunday.

Porcello gave up three hits and struck out four. He has fanned 14 without a walk this spring, and has a 2.08 ERA.

Porcello is competing with Drew Smyly for the final opening in the Tigers' rotation. Smyly has yet to allow a run in nine innings.

Dan Haren went four innings in his third start for the Nationals. He allowed two earned runs in four innings and struck out three.

Andy Dirks had two hits for the Tigers, improving his spring average to .308. He is in competition with Brennan Boesch and Quintin Berry for the left field slot, and all three played against Washington.
