DETROIT - Bruce Rondon's three-week apprenticeship at Triple A Toledo ended Tuesday when the Tigers summoned their hard-throwing rookie right-handed reliever ahead of Tuesday night's game against the Kansas City Royals at Comerica Park.
Rondon will replace right-handed reliever Octavio Dotel, who has been placed on the disabled list with elbow irritation. The promotion follows a suspenseful spring camp in which Rondon nearly made the team ahead of Opening Day.
After being installed as the favorite to become manager Jim Leyland's ninth-inning closer, Rondon was often unsettled during his Grapefruit League performances, although at times his 100 mph fastball and slider combination were devastating.
The Tigers decided at the 11th hour to allow Rondon additional time at Triple A as he refined his command and his primary two-pitch repertoire. In seven appearances with the Mud Hens, Rondon did not allow a run. His numbers spanning 7-2/3 innings: five hits, nine strikeouts, two walks.
