Tigers slowing down Justin Verlander's rehab due to soreness

DETROIT – Justin Verlander experienced another mini setback this weekend when he felt more soreness than usual after two days of rest from a bullpen session that was cut short in Pittsburgh.

Verlander was ruled out for a tentatively scheduled return to the rotation on Tuesday after his simulated game was cut short on April 15. He was scheduled to throw 60 pitches during the simulated game at PNC Park but quit after 45 pitches due to what he called 'fatigue.'

On Saturday the former MVP and Cy Young pitcher was feeling soreness that caused Brad Ausmus to slow the process down once again.

Despite the extended rehab process, the Tigers say Verlander is not yet scheduled to undergo an MRI. He last threw for the Tigers on March 28 near the end of spring training.

The Tigers are being cautious with Verlander as he tries to return from his first career stint on the disabled list.
