The Bruins showed a lot of tenacity from the get-go, but it was Jimmy Howard's mistake while playing the puck that put Boston up 1-0 early. Justin Florek fired it into the open net after Howard shot it off his teammate's leg. It went right to Florek.

The Bruins continued to hit hard and force the issue in Detroit's zone, drawing a few penalties. The Red Wings survived a short 5-on-3 but Boston's Reilly Smith got behind Howard to put a loose puck in the net and make it 2-0 at 10:35 in the 1st period.

The Red Wings would stay scoreless until 13:20 of the 2nd period when Luke Glendening had a rebound hit him and get past Tuukka Rask. However, Milan Lucic answered with a nifty give-and-go play with Jarome Iginla to make it 3-1.

Detroit went on the penalty kill early in the 3rd period and the Bruins capitalized. Chara claimed position in front of Howard and put back a rebound to make it 4-1.

Detroit pulled Howard for an extra attacker with just more than 3 minutes to go in regulation, but failed to get another goal and Howard went back in.

NOTES: Detroit went 0-4 on the power play while Boston went 2-4. The Red Wings had 34 shots to Boston's 29. The Bruins had 33 hits to Detroit's 29.

Luke Glendening scored his first career power play goal.
