Detroit man competes in Grand Prix

Brian 'O' is only Detroit man planning to race on Belle isle

DETROIT – ve Brian Olatunji is a professional race car driver who could use some support from his hometown.

After 15 years in the drag racing world, 29-year-old Brian "O" is setting his sight on a big Detroit race that is making a comeback.

As a finalist in the Champion Spark Plugs Search for a Champion contest, Olatunji is the only Detroit native who plans to race in the upcoming Detroit Grand Prix in June on Belle Isle.

More votes could help him win the $60,000 grand prize and help pave a path to the Indy car series.

"Why is it important here in Detroit? Well, it's home," he said. "What better place to make a debut besides home? You know what, I am a guy who is chasing his dream."

Olatunji stresses education first, as he earned a mechanical engineering degree from Kettering University and believes it has helped him on his journey.

"Hey, you have to get an education first before you do anything else, because that's going to be the cornerstone," he said. "They always say rep your city. Well, I am repping D-town always."

The Grand Prix hasn't been held in Detroit since 2008.
